A group of forty engineers from Calpine Corporation’s Turbine Maintenance Group recently participated in a full-day writing workshop at the company’s Pasadena Texas facility.

The Calpine Mechanical Engineers are responsible for inspections, repairs, parts replacement, and maintenance of large, high-pressure gas and steam turbines. Their goal is to help eliminate the high cost of power shortages, outages, and downtime.

A big part of their work is to produce comprehensive inspection reports that detail the step-by-step processes the engineers use during the inspection and resolution. Not only are they expected to describe the processes in precise detail, the engineers have to show the rationale behind the decision they make in the field.

These inspection reports are then delivered to a diverse range of other professionals including Plant Mangers, Maintenance Crews, Legal Departments, and upper management who has to approve the steps taken. This kind of reporting requires clear, detailed, and persuasive writing.

“This was excellent…first-class training!” said Luis Barrera, Turbine Engineer. “John gave me new ways to think clearly…to understand that information alone is not knowledge for my reader, and how to simplify my reports to make the process and ideas clear.”

“If your company is debating the aspects of concise clear writing, John's Writing Workshop is the way to go,” said Scott Williams, Senior Steam Turbine Engineer.

“The workshop will help you develop skills to communicate effectively in all parts of your job,” said Tim Wigginton, Controls Engineer. “Especially how to create a clear objective, and to listen to my reader.”

“I appreciate what John taught us about specifics in our reporting,” added Patrick Riley. “Like including comparisons when we use numbers, and using specific descriptions rather than general terms. I’ll definitely use these ideas.”

“This course taught me to see my writing in a different light,” said Edsel David Townsend, Field Engineer. “I’ll use the brainstorming and outlining techniques to help my ideas flow within my paragraphs, so I get to the point logically and clearly.”
